Tell us how your nickname came about.

I'll start off with my nickname.

Nickname: Etrigan

My brother was trying to think of a gaming name for me and Etrigan popped into his mind. The nickname originates from a character from the original Batman cartoon series. Etrigan is half human and half demon so he will summon the demon when need be if there is danger looming. The other aliases I go by over the years with having this nickname are: ET, Estrogen (inside joke) and Etri.

The famous line for Etrigan is:

"Gone, gone, form of man, arise the demon, Etrigan!"

More information: Etrigan

Years ago back in the day when I needed a internet nick I was obsessed with dinosaurs, so it made perfect sense to pick Vraptor7. Since then I use it only out of habit, and have shortened it to vrap for convenience.

Way back in the day, like 2000, i went to Florida for a few weeks where my cousin was obsessed with quake 2. After spending most of the time there watching him play Paintball 2 I asked for a turn. So i sit down and he's like 'ok whats a name you want?' My first choice was Herron, but that was already taken, then i chose Goose, but that again was taken. Finally I was like how about JoE because it sounds like a hullbilly redneck name, being 10 years old at the time i didnt know any better. When i left he burnt be a copy of q2 and paintball, after i installed the name JoE just stuck, and sooner rather than later developed into J0E

When I first got into Action Quake 2, I really hadn't settled on a nickname. I was doing so poorly in AQ2 that one day I decided that I was about as dangerous as a butter knife. So, I switched my name in game to "A Butter Knife". That name was a lot of fun with the Action Quake 2 kill messages. ("____ was killed by A Butter Knife!") I ended up joining a clan, and due to the limitation on the number of characters in a Quake 2 name and needing to wear the clan tag, I shortened my name to ButtaKnife. It has stuck since.

Wow, you guys all have names originating from gaming...mine is just from playing around on MSN. After a couple of display names (flip the frodo, better than gandalf saruman even sauron, wanna be hippie,...) I discovered that you could put emoticons in your display name as well. So I played around and made (l)child's (f)power and (r)(*) (translating to lovechild's flowerpower and rainbowstar) I was really into hippies back then...later on it got shortened to rainbowstar. Since I've since discovered that rainbowstar was actually really a kind of 'codename' for drugs in the 70's (my brother told me) and that numerically speaking it fits me just right, I kept it as nickname, but also as my "wiccan" name (yeah...i was in a coven for a while)

Before rainbowstar, my nicknames were Isis_Minerva (fav godesses of those ancient cultures) and Belgian_Witch. Because of the latter, you'll sometimes find me as Rainbowstar_belgianwitch or RainbowstarBW in case Rainbowstar itsself is already taken. As I've come to learn, it's quite a popular nickname, actually

gee, I don't know where to start.

My first gaming alias was soul_digger. It originates from song by U2 named Elevation. Somewhere along the lyrics, it says "diggin' on my soul now going down, excavation." So, change it up a bit and you have a soul digger. That was about in '98. A year later, I got into a mod in Unreal Tournament called TallyHo!. It was addictive for me. Anywho, there was a character in the mod named Xan Jr. He always raped me. So, what did I do? I basically took the name for my own. Absolutely no one else on this here internetz uses it. So I will. I've made it a, well, useful name I guess.

Anyways, a few other of my aliases are witness (cause a jehovah witness visited my house when I was thinking of a name to use in CSS) and also Dimiku (made one day from charmap to use in UT, later turned out to be my MMORPG nick, everywhere).

Ta-dah!

Well... Most know me by BigDaddyD - So that will be the nickname that i use here... I was sitting around one day... and after much pwnij on NetBlitz Q2DM server, I decided to go by bigdaddy. after joining Team Karn, I discovered that my name wasn't unique... so i decided to add the initial of my first name, D, thereby rendering BigDaddyD- I rose from the ashes, and have hence forth been known as BigD, BDD, BigDaddyDave. Now the nickname i currently use, SgtDavidY - was born from my position on the force. I am a patrol sergeant, and damned proud!

To be honoust, I wouldn't know :x

I think it was because we were having a laugh about making nicknames at some point, and one guy thought of a nick and said I should use that too, so I said "I'm not you!" which pretty much became my nick then =P

When I started playing paintball2, I was 11. So, I obviously wanted a name that sounded UbErKeWl in that 11-year old kind of way. So, I chose ViCiOUS. Then when I found someone on ETG already used that nick (the ircop, duh >.<) I changed it to ViCiOUZ and eventually to ViciouZ. Still lots of people seem to use it. Sometimes you see me as blimey on IRC, or blimey, tosser, fatty lump or bawls on DP.

I made up a nonsensical name that started with "Lore" when I was first learning about the Internet. I know a lot of random information, and over time people started calling me "Lore" for short.

When I came to IRC, it was clear that "Lore" by itself was too generic. Since I specialize in knowing things about snakes, I added "OfSerpents."

i chose goddess initially, don't remember why, i think i was in a hurry that day. but when i started playing first person shooters, it just didn't seem a formidable enough nick for such violence, so i added the prefix. now, i don't really like it at all, (lol) so i abbreviated it. does any of this make sense? haha. <3

Justinph5 is old- with my first ever email address, basically initials, with 5 at the end :P

The one I use all the time now: Jusu - was me and my roommates playing NES! only 4 characters fit in the name column, so Justin didn't work, so the letter I picked was u, creating Jusu.

My first ever nick was Zidane. (From Final Fantasy IX.)

After a year or two I plagiarized DancesWithSnoopy's nick and used JigsWithoutWoodstock.

I then started using Jigsy (People were calling me Jigs and Jigsy anyway.) since around the end of 2005. (Pre-Sept ... according to an old log I found.)

Contrary to what most people believe, I didn't get my name from the movie Se7en. I've spent a few times regretting my choice because of some comments, (I didn't know of the movie, and yeah, try to tell that to the people who are saying "Hey you took your nick from that movie!")- but but since to me; there was never any association to the movie to begin with, I kept it.

It was back when I first started IRC, I was about 13 and it was on UnderNet.

This was back when script kiddies were really booming and #hacker channels all over IRC consisted mostly of people who didn't know what TCP meant. All these people had numbers in their names cause it looked "1337" So my teenage reaction was to think of a name that suited me, but still had the "1337" (lol..) look to it. I was always fond of the number 7 and to me, seven and 7 just seemed like the perfect word/number to mix. So from some point on in IRC, I changed from alekx to Se7eN, and I've kept it ever since.

I think I'm doing what bg is doing anymore. I've toned my nick down to two letters as well. It's just easier to type and remember, XJ!

(we should start spamming/pasting this forum link in #GG ) =P

Mines a weird one,

Started where I botted with a previous newbie name, and i wanted a second chance (clean slate), so i thought of another random name.

At first, i thought Demolition, however i'm not into construction or anything like that, decided to change the I to a U (Demolution) so it'll sound better and won't mean a thing.

Yes usually names suppose to mean something, however this is after all the internet, some names don't have to mean crap.

:)

My first online nickname was poobrain3, used mostly for my command and conquer accounts, in which I got some rather high rankings.

After hitting the age of about 12-13, I suddenly realised how stupid that name looked, so decided for a change. I've been brought up through church, and so 'Messiah' soon popped into my head... but it looked too boring and un-original like that, so I replaced the 'e' and 'i' for a '3' and '1' respectively. And there you have it; M3ss1ah.

M3ssy was just the inevitable abbreviation :)

Oke, my first online nickname i don't remember, my first irc/ut nick was barney_the_dinosaur, because i thought the idea of "barney the dinosaur turned * into a leaky piece of meat" was funny. then i changed it to BuRN_STuFF because i thought fire was cool or something... i was 12, sue me...

then i quit IRC, got a pet bunny, and came back a while later as "CuteBunnies," someone typed "/me pats teh bunneh" and i knew someone called DuckY` so i changed it to "BunneH"

The end.

The Sistersue came from a nickname my mom used to call me when i was little.

When I was born, she always had the idea in her head to name her daughter Susan. But for some reason she couldn't think of a middle name and b4 she could bring me home...she had to name me. So she decided on Sherry Linn; after she named me she thought of a middle name for Susan....but she never had another girl.

All my mom could think of b4 we left the hospital was Susan Marie....but for some reason she didn't like that middle name anymore...and didn't think of Renee until after she had already named me and we had gone home.

Well, the first community I joined was the N community ( http://www.metanetsoftware.com/ ) and I needed a nick. One of my favorite pastimes is running, and the game involves ninjas, so I came up with runningninja. This later got shortened to rn, which I like much better, but a lot of forums refuse to go with it. So I'll use runningninja or "hoo" (coming from "Who Are You" by The Who) as alternate nicks. I originally meant for runningninja to be just for the N community, but the name kinda stuck.

Quew ~ Pronounced like the letter Q.
Derived from back in my childhood, playing on my Tandy and Commodore64. I've used this name, pretty much since then and was made to be something that was easy to remember and quick to type out. I've gotten used to the letter "q" being a standardized and acceptable shortform.
I tried to change my nick a few times and people just said.. "Meh, change it back."
I did.

My nickname has sparked many a debate and I have to say out of the 8-9 years I've used it only one person has ever gotten it right without hints. Then again to get the correct reason I chose the name youd have to know what the kanji that make up the nickname means so I can't fault many people for that. Shizuru or Ã—¯ is broken down into "Ã"(yai/shizu) or "calm/still/peace/serenity" and "—¯" (todo/ru/tone) or "to stay or remain" so basically it means to "remain still/calm/serene" . While many on here would debate that I'm not like that most don't really know me in person.

Oh yeah this forum software doesnt support the charset that I need for it to show the kanji so yeah... you get to look at gibberish where I put the kanji.... I'm not fixing it.

Well, I started my nick when Perfect Dark came out and you could name your character in multiplayer. I was a really big fan of Kano from Mortal Kombat and snipers in general. I came up with "12ed3ye" because I liked the way the 'r' looked like an inital cap, with the 'e' being another cap and numbers for letters was really cool then. I also liked that it was 1-2-3 and I had a thing for The 1-2-3 Kid (Later known as Syxx Pak and X-Pak) in WCW when I watched it with my Dad and played the WWF RAW on my friend's Sega 32X.

Then one of my friends got me in to anime and his older brother got me in to IRC where you could queue up downloads and watch fansubs. So I was known as HonooHashiru which was supposed to mean "fire storm" during that time. Later I was told that "it should be the other way around, HashiruHonoo". I didn't like the way it rolled off the tongue at that time so it didn't change (sounds cooler now) but when I was introduced to Unreal Tournament by the same friend, I decided to go back to the "12ed3ye" due to sniping dream. I think it was at this time I joined a Livid and Gifted server and was completely enthralled with them that I had to join UTChat (the default IRC in the UT client) and see how I could get in the clan. Wouldn't you know, you can't start a nick with a number in IRC so I had to revert to the present-day "I2ed3ye".

I've recently tried to shorthand it to "red" but Se7eN doesn't seem to like that so I guess I'm stuck with I2ed3ye until I have a species operation and can become FluffyNhugglyKitty.

It's not too popular of a nick but sometimes I have to use a lower-case 'L' or whatever to make an account. I swear the only other person that uses it exactly is someone from Quake III and I believe he's already registered when it's taken.

D4rkFang (MU, some where around 98~99)
Then some other abbreviations of Fang, since people kept taking them -_-
Basically, Dark/Black/White fang, till CS:CZ and UT2k4.
Well, I was 8+ years old...Just looked for a cool name, and the numbers were an unwanted addition I had to use because everything to do with fang seemed to have been taken.

During my steam time, any and all steam names had the ||MP3|| tag and started off as HuntMaster.
After a while I realized just how noobie I really was, and decided I'de just call myself Noob and be done with it.
Some time past, and I became an upper tier player, some one hard to beat that went up there with the loathsome trash that used hacks, purposefully playing with them to show that I can still manage kills on them even with their hacks.
At that time, some one told me that I should definitely stop calling myself "Noob"(Kept raping him and his entire team, solo) so I changed to ProNoob.
"||MP3|| ProNoob" Was my last stable CS:CZ/S name, untill I changed it to ziv.
"||MP3|| Sticks&Stones", or some abbreviation of that was always my nick in HL2:DM, It stem from my unnatural ability to beat people to death with the crowbar, no matter what weapon went against me, or the distance that needed to be crossed to my target.

On forums, and IjjI games - when I started playing them -, I usually went by either GoogleGuy99(since other abbreviations were always taken) or D4rkH4wk1.
GoogleGuy came from my rl friends, who constantly have me do their searches, whether it be for hacks, warez or any other thing they simply failed to find within 10 minutes of their search attempt.
D4rkH4wk1 Was simply an alternate account that stem from one of my countless e-mails.

As for IRC, the moment I set foot on 2k4, was the moment I set foot on IRC.
I started in ETG and UT as zivisgod, I have - to this day - no idea why I did that.
Must have been drugged at the time of thinking it up, but for the sake of consistency, I kept it for a while untill my brother got me annoyed about it...I don't remember the details, but fallowing that, and the apparent lack of myself being drugged somehow, I changed to just ziv.

ziv is my middle name, and for those that don't know me, yes, I hate it when people capitalize the 'z'.

These days, I play mostly MMORPGs and my nicks are usually an abbreviation of Crimson.
The sole exception in a long long while, is my new character in Aion, since it seemed all were taken, I'm going by Shirotsuga(I'm un-sure as to whether that is correct or not...) for my assassin, and Divinejudgment for my cleric.
I'd like to point out that you cannot use numbers, spaces or more then the initial capital for the name in Aion -_-.
Shirotsuga, IF I got it right, should mean White Fang, I took it from a fanfic I read once.
I am a bit of a Kakashi fan for those that know what that even means.

Oh, also, I will forever sign my posts with my middle name like this,
ziv.

ziv, I think you win the award for the largest number of nicks I've seen from one person, and that's saying a lot. :P

Yeah, I know x>

That's not even listing all the minor nick changes I had on IRC, and some other nicks I had in games where EVERYTHING was taken :>

There was that time with the evasion too, I must have cycled through at least 15 nicks in just that time, and acting like a new person every time xD
Basically, I got away with it, managing to fool everyone but Sis...and I think Jigsy caught on to me a couple of times, I don't remember too well x>

Used some Wolf variations, mostly.

ziv.

I'll give you 3 guesses and the first two don't count.

well, ok, I love classical mythology and with each day that passes I am even more awestruck by the profoundness of the universe . I'm also addicted to humor. In my opinon the planet Uranus is the funniest planet that I know of in the universe. I've always loved the funny names people come up with in the game. One of my all time favorites is $2.99ChineseBuffet so the server message says, "You were killed by $2.99 ChineseBuffet" and I laugh. The word Uranus is the latin spelling of the name of the Greek god Ouranos spelled in latin characters or something like that. The word ouranos is also used to refer to the sky or the heavens. It is used often in the greek writings that were culled for use in The Bible. So ouranos/uranus also refers to "heaven", HA. I think it's pretty good that with one utterance of my nick you get references to astronomy, heaven, filth, humor and more. Thank you.

I started playing Quake 3 arena as soon as Q3Test came out and Rocket Arena 3 the day it came out. Me and my cousins started our first gaming clan started up as -=ToR=- We were the Targets of Rockets. We lived up to that name as well.

Anyways, one night when we were playing a clan match, I changed my name to AlGore as a joke because it was in 2000 when all the recount shenanigans were going on, and I thought that everyone deserved a chance to shoot Al Gore in the face with a rocket. Anyways, that was the last time I played RA3 for about a year or so because my cousin lost his internet and at that time we weren't smart enough to start up a dedicated server so we could play on a LAN.

Internet got cheap again, and my cousin got it, and we started playing RA3 again. My name was still AlGore, so I started playing again and it stuck.

Also, don't tell anyone, but I'm a Republican. : )

The earliest I can actually remember using a nickname for is Diablo 1, I've played multiplayer games before that (such as WarCraft 2 over a 28.8Kbps modem!) but I don't think they required nicknames, either that or I used my own name. Anyway, me and a friend got into playing Diablo 1 and at first we played it single player round each others houses in turn. He used the nickname Teclis (a character from the Warhammer universe as he was quite a bit of a fan) and I used the same as we transferred the save file between houses on a floppy disk. Eventually we persuaded our parents (we were young) to allow us to play occasionally via direct dialling on our uber high speed 56kbps modems. We'd call each other up before hand so we could decide who was dialling who and let our parents know "If the phone rings, don't answer it!" xD. Anyway, we couldn't use the same nickname for this, so now I needed a new one. Being young and of limited originality I chose the variant, Tecker.

This nickname stuck for a long time all through my Quake and Ultima Online days and into Counter-Strike. A lot of online friends started calling me Teck or Tek for short, particularly a UO friend called Mex, but I never really shortened my nickname (had some variants but used Tecker most of the time). It wasn't till I was in a Counter-Strike clan that a change occurred. It arose due to 2 main reasons; the first being that there was another guy on the quakenet IRC network that started using it and I was in a constant battle with him for the nickname (which lead to me using an IRC bouncer), and secondly that I was beginning to go off the name. I think the catalyst was the fact that in Counter-Strike my performance was so inconsistent, in some matches I'd play horrifcally and in others I'd be on fire. I thought it may have been due to the pressure to be a good player in the clan, as there were quite a few great players and I was trying to keep up with them. So one day I joined our clan server under a different name, Jargon. With complete anonymity and no pressure to play one way or the other, I really got into a good groove and smashed my way up the scoreboard and put quite a distance between myself and next leading player. Of course, people start accusing me of haxing, but I was enjoying the attention, taking it all as a complement and winding some players up saying "I can't help it if you sux0rs ^_^". Next thing I know, someone has reported me to my clan leader who then joins, reads the banter that's going on, sees my epic kill-death ratio and then bans me from our server (that I helped pay for). Back in IRC I explain that I was Jargon, that I wasn't cheating and that I would be using this new nickname from now on.

I chose Jargon for a few reasons. I'm a programmer and know my computer stuff so everyone says I talk jargon anyway, my first and last name begin with J (so I went from JJ to JJJ) and I just felt it fit :).

I'm a follower.
My brother's nickname is FireDrake or some shit.
I thought it'd be cool to do the same thing.
First I had PlatinumDrake. Then I decided that was too long. So I have SteelDrake. :D
Although my dad's a leader of a clan. Masters of Annihilation. They were an Unreal clan, and were #1 in the world. I wanna join them, if they still play.
