GG 3rd anniversary party wrap-up - Posted by ButtaKnife on November 14, 2009

We're winding down from our bash today, and we want to thank everyone who was able to make it to our 3rd anniversary party. It's hard to imagine that it has already been 3 years since we first kicked off the network. We've gone from a small group of people on a network that was, to put it nicely, a work in progress. Now, Global Gamers is a slightly larger group of people, and, well, is still a work in progress, because we want to do so much more for the great people that have helped us shape GG into what it has become today. We are very proud of GG, and we are very fortunate to be able to host such wonderful communities. Events like the party today are really just small tokens of our appreciation. Thank you, everyone, for sticking with us through rough patches and smooth sailing. We are committed to making your experience on GG an enjoyable one, and for that reason, we will continue to improve the network and the services we offer as much and as fast as we can.

Here's a recap of the events from the party, and the winners of those events and prizes:

DP Tournament
The Digital Paint: Paintball2 1v1 tournament was a lot of fun today, even for those of us who weren't playing. We have a lot of people to thank for helping with the tournament, because their efforts really made this tournament shine.

First, we want to thank Kyuuchi for working very hard for quite a while to bring the tournament together. What started as a small 1v1 double-elimination tournament ended up as a 32-player tournament with an American half and a European half. From beginning to end, he managed to keep things in order and make sure that the tournament was on track. During the tournament, he made sure that the players knew what server they were playing on, made sure that jehar knew what was going on, updated the brackets, fielded questions and PMs (not always nice PMs, too), and just overall handled a fast-paced tournament without going crazy. The tournament was a huge success because of him. Thanks, Kyuuchi!

XtremeBain and T3RR0R15T also really came through for us. They made sure the tournament had good servers and an IRC score bot to keep the tournament channel updated for the entire tournament. XtremeBain worked with us before the tournament for server configs, bracket ideas, and more. T3RR0R15T pulled together servers for the tournament at the last minute when it seemed like we were going to be short. Thank you both for being there for us for the resources that are often very difficult to bring together in tournaments. We really appreciate it, and I'm sure the players did, too!

jehar and RottenRose from TastyCast rounded out the tournament awesomeness by providing the coverage and entertainment for everyone who wasn't playing. jehar is a master in the art of game coverage, and his on-air commentary was both funny and insightful. Watching and listening to the video stream was a real treat this year! RottenRose coordinated the IRC side of things while jehar focused on the games. This meant that she was able to keep up with all of the channels and relay important information to jehar when he wasn't able to see IRC. Their combined efforts meant that the TastyCast coverage was, well, awesome! To add even more awesome to the mix, ViciouZ joined jehar on-air to delve into his experience with DP and provide his own perspectives on the matches. (Not to mention, the addition of his British accent was great!) With all three of them working together, those of us viewing the coverage had a lot of fun, and we really want to thank jehar, RR, and ViciouZ for their contributions today. Great work!

As for the results of the tournament: Riddick won first place, beating domic on ub_cliff. Everyone played very well through the whole tournament, and the final matches were a real treat to watch. The final standings are available on the tournament site, and the winners of the prizes were:
1st: Riddick - Razer DeathAdder gaming mouse
2nd: domic - mini R/C helicopter
3rd: Shockwave and delphi - $20 game on Steam

UNO
Etrigan showed several people the ropes with our UNO! bot, and after playing some regular UNO! and some Speed UNO!, GohAn emerged as the winner of the event, and will be receiving a steelseries I-2 mouse surface. As a side note, the #UNO channel is always open for players, and we hope to revive the UNO! Friday Night regular games.
1st: s0n`GohAn - steelseries I-2
2nd: [q|t]Gamabunta - steelseries QcK
3rd: jeejee - steelseries QcK

Milestone
brian's Milestone bot, which is an IRC rendition of the Mille Bornes card game, was used and abused by us for the Milestone event. It's always fun showing games like Milestone to people who haven't played them before, and the players really seemed to have a blast. Gamabunta managed to edge out the competition in the end, and will receive a neat little R/C helicopter for his efforts. Like UNO!, the #Milestone channel is always open for players, and we would like to bring back the Milestone Mondays! games. Watch the Community Events list for times!
1st: [q|t]Gamabunta - R/C helicopter
2nd: Kyuuchi - R/C Mario Kart toy
3rd: ziv - R/C Mario Kart toy

Maze
The IRC maze made a big return this year, and to sweeten the deal, we bribed everyone by making the first place prize a Seagate 320GB external hard drive. GohAn completed the maze in an impressive 14 minutes and 27 seconds to win the hard drive. The Maze game can be a little confusing, but that didn't stop a bunch of people from trying very hard to win that hard drive. If I had to guess, I'd bet that we'll see the Maze come back again...
1st: s0n`GohAn - 320GB ext. HD
2nd: ViciouZ - HALO 4GB USB stick
3rd: nabeel - HALO 4GB USB stick

Runic/Torchlight trivia
So, there's this awesome game available called Torchlight, and Global Gamers is very proud to host channels for the game and the development team that made it, Runic Games. We just couldn't live with ourselves if we didn't incorporate something into the party that involved them, so we made a little trivia game! My IRC client is still recovering from the PM spam from people trying to answer the questions, but I know I had a lot of fun, and I hope everyone else did, too. In the end, nabeel managed to hax...I mean, win a Seagate 320GB external hard drive of his own after accumulating 6 points. Rhonlore was the runner-up with 4 points, and jehar was right behind him with 3 points. Thanks for playing! (By the way, Torchlight fans should definitely hang out in #RunicGames with other fans and even some of the Runic devs!)
1st: nabeel - 320 GB ext. HD
2nd: Rhonlore - Torchlight (going to a friend possibly)
3rd: jehar - Torchlight

Raffle winners
What would a GG event be without raffles? Well, it wouldn't be a GG event at all! This year we limited the events a little, but in exchange we wanted to do more raffles. That's exactly what we did, and we want to congratulate the winners. It's nice to win something by simply typing !raffle, right?

TastyCast song contest
The TastyCast crew (who just happen to hang out in #TastyCast all the time) provided coverage of the party that was nothing short of fantastic, and we were able to even sneak in a little contest for those who were still following the party coverage after the Digital Paint tournament. jehar, the gamecaster extraordinaire, played a song on the stream. The contest was simple: Identify the performer and the song title. The song was tricky, though, since it had almost no lyrics, so Google wasn't very helpful. Even so, ViciouZ figured out the song just before it ended, and won a ThinkGeek gift certificate.
ViciouZ - $25 ThinkGeek gift certificate

Congratulations to the winners, and thank you to everyone who participated today! Please let us, the Global Gamers staff, know if we can do anything to help you or your channel. Suggestions and feedback are always welcome, since without your comments, we may not know what would help the most.
